Sweta Patel

Sweta Patel is an associate at Bruckheim & Patel. Ms. Patel is a litigation attorney focused on protecting the constitutional rights of her clients.  Her practice is truly client-centered. She combines a vigorous drive to defend your legal rights with a capacity to listen and understand your personal concerns with compassion.

Ms. Patel represents clients in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia and at the District’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). She focuses her practice area representing clients in Civil Protective Order (CPO) matters, expungement/sealing of cases, other criminal offenses, and traffic matters for the firm. She works tirelessly to achieve excellence and ensure the best possible settlement or resolution for her clients. Ms. Patel additionally specializes in misdemeanor and felony criminal appellate work. Many of the appeals that she works on are currently pending at the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

Prior to joining Bruckheim & Patel, Ms. Patel was a judicial law clerk to twelve judges at the District Court of Maryland for Montgomery County. As a law clerk, she was in court daily assisting judges to be fair and make the right legal decisions for the litigants. She processed over 200 affidavit judgements each week, prepared the judges’ weekly motion docket, researched complex and novel issues, and drafted various opinions.

Ms. Patel earned her Juris Doctor degree from American University’s Washington College of Law. During law school, she was the Business and Marketing Editor for American University’s Business Law Review. Ms. Patel was also chosen to be the student commencement speaker on behalf of the entire 2016 graduating class.

Throughout law school, Ms. Patel interned at ALL for Cameroon in Bamenda Cameroon, the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C., the King’s County District Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn, New York, and the Department of Justice’s Asset and Forfeiture Section in Washington, D.C.

Prior to attending law school, Ms. Patel graduated cum laude from Georgia State University, with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Political Science and a minor in Spanish.

Ms. Patel is barred in District of Columbia. As an active lawyer in the D.C. community, she is a member of the South Asian Bar Association. She is proficient in Spanish. Ms. Patel will be working as a federal law clerk to the Honorable Ivan D. Davis at the Eastern District Court of Virginia in August of 2018.
